Today we are going to look into something that may be challenging even for a native speaker - community abbreviations. This time, we are focusing on kirpputori (kirppis, flea markets) communities - Facebook groups for selling and buying second-hand stuff in Finland.
Ostaa - to buy (osta - imperative form)
Myydä - to sell (myyty - sold, myy - imperative form)
Vaihtaa - to exchange (e.g. you can get a second-hand lamp in exchange for something small, usually a package of coffee or a chocolate bar)
Antaa - to give for free
Sometimes you may search for Facebook groups using such search keywords as myydään/ostetaan/vaihdetaan/annetaan (passive form of verbs listed above) + name of the city or area.
Av - alustava varaus - preliminary reservation. Means that someone is interested in purchasing something but still cannot confirm it finally (e.g. needs to discuss with family).
Varattu - booked - item is reserved, but still not sold.
Yv - means yksityisviesti, private message, used to inquire about details of things to buy or sell.
Jono - means queue. If someone is already willing to buy certain thing, everyone else can line up in queue. Remember, that the same product can be sold in different Facebook groups (MMM, myynnissä myös muualla), so be fast!
Vain nouto - pick-up only - the seller does not arrange delivery.
Up - means just up - an author of the post wants to ensure that his post appears again in your Facebook newsfeed.
And just a general note - take all necessary precautions when shopping at online kirppis - filter out suspiciously looking spam posts and enquire about details of product and delivery!
