Maintaining your Finnish listening skills during social distancing

Maintaining Finnish is not an easy way generally. Now your classes might be postponed or the coffee break conversations reduced due to the remote work environment. Now it is a time to focus on your listening skills!

Beginner Finnish

Check YLE Oppiminen for easy-to-follow videos to practice different conversational situations:

Supisuomea might also help you to go through some easy topics.

I have slightly more advice for Intermediate Finnish though, but you can always try listening to some podcasts to recognise the general topics and conversational trends. Most important is not to get too overwhelmed!

Intermediate Finnish

Audiobooks (äänikirjat)

Suomalainen has recently launched its own audiobook service:.

If you are based in Helsinki area, check Helmet selection of audiobooks.

Note that audiobooks can be a challenging exercise - if you a visual person, it might not be your favourite way of learning at all! If so, try out shorter podcasts and news, as I recommend below.

Spotify in Finnish

Login to Spotify and find a big selection of free podcasts hosted by companies, NGOs and individuals. Selection includes podcasts on news, social responsibility, investment and many more.

Supla

Supla is another great way to look for podcasts on different topics and complexity, recommended to me by one experienced Finnish teacher. Worth a try!

YLE Puhe

Browse through a large selection here. It also has a large selection of sports podcasts that I am used to skip, but others might be of different opinion.
